50 Years ago today: "Weatherly Wins the America's Cup"
In the era of Camelot, Weatherly won a tight racing series against the first Australian challenger, Gretel. Although Weatherly was built for the 1958 Cup she was not selected to defend it that year, but with modifications and a different crew she went on to victory in the 1962 the America's Cup. The large spectator fleet included the destroyer Joseph P Kennedy, named in honor of JFK's older brother, a downed WWII pilot. Aboard her were the president and Mrs. Kennedy. They stayed at her family's Newport home, Hammersmith Farm and hosted a dinner for the two crews while in town.
