Renowned yachtsman, Chandler Hovey of Marblehead, MA commissioned Ray Hunt to design the varnished hulled Easterner for competition in the 1958 America's Cup. She was considered by many to be the fastest of the 1958 Twelves, though she didn't fair well during the trials. With Chandler Hovey on the helm and the remaining crew made of family members, she was eliminated in the 1958 racing. Although she also competed in The America's Cup defender trials in 1962 and 1964, Easterner was never chosen to defend The Cup.
In 1995 she returned to Newport waters after a 28 year stay in California under the name of Newsboy. While on the West Coast she earned a name as an ocean racer to be reckoned with. Since her return to New England, the beautiful Easterner has undergone a complete restoration and Coast Guard certification. America's Cup Charters is proud to have the elegant “bright” hulled beauty as one of our fleet. Enjoy your sail aboard the legendary Easterner.
