NYYC's Annual Regatta - great racing!
It was a great weekend of sailing here in Newport with all of our Twelves competing in the New York Yacht Club's 161st annual regatta. Friday featured the traditional Around The Island Race, sailed counter-clockwise around Conanicut Island in a light to moderate Southerly breeze, with Weatherly emerging as the winner of the traditional division and Nefertiti getting the bronze for third.
The week end saw all windward/leeward racing, with four races on Saturday and two on Sunday. The Grand Prix , Modern and traditional divisions all started together providing tight, competitive sailing for all. Intrepid finished third against her aluminum competitors, while the battle between American Eagle and Weatherly came down to the final race in the Traditionals to see which yacht would break the tied score. The wind was SE at 10-15 kts. when Weatherly took the final start and covered American Eagle to win the division. Nefertiti was right on her heels in third to give our fleet a 1,2,3 finish in the traditional 12 Metre class.
Congratulations to all of the skippers and crews, and a special thanks to the NYYC race committee, the event sponsor Rolex, and all who volunteered their time to organize this very successful regatta!
